Chapter 10

“And?” I pressed Paisley.

“Well…” PC Pinnock began with a sigh. “It looks like a different email was used for each account, as well as different computers. The person who owns the accounts also used a VPN.”

“So, what you’re saying is that there’s no way that we’ll be able to find out who owns those accounts,” I said.

“I’m afraid so,” she admitted.

“Shit,” I sighed and sunk down in my seat.

In all honesty, I actually had gotten my hopes up a bit, and I’d been certain that Paisley would find something we could use. But the killer had been so careful with everything else, so of course they had been just as careful with the computer.

At least I still had PC Pinnock on my side.

“There’s one other thing,” she said.

I turned to her, and I noticed how awkward she suddenly looked. Her face was flushed, and she was wringing her hands together nervously.

“What is it?” I asked.

“I don’t think I can keep helping you,” she said in a quiet voice. “At least, not for a little while.”

“What?” I said. “Why not?”

“Bridges saw me in there,” she said. “I don’t know… it sort of put into perspective how close I am to losing everything by helping you with all of this. If he’d seen you in there as well as me, my job would’ve been on the line.”

“But he didn’t,” I pointed out.

“Only just,” she said. “Look, I still want to be kept in the loop with this. But, I think for now it’s better if I distance myself from you a wee bit. Think about it. If I found something out in an unlawful way, and before you say anything I think we both know that it’s heading in that direction, then the evidence would be useless in a court case. It would be disregarded because of how it was obtained. I’m sorry, I really am, but I just think I need to take a step back for a while.”

I was stunned. On the way over, Paisley had been so adamant that she was going to see this case through with me, and now, here she was telling me how she was going to pull out of the running.

At the same time, I completely understood where she was coming from, and I realised that she had actually just taken my arguments into consideration. I had been the one that pointed out how at risk her job was because she was helping me, and it appeared that the Bridges incident had proven it for her. I didn’t blame her for wanting to back off from this, in fact, it actually made sense. At least for a little while.

Besides, I was perfectly capable of carrying on with Brodie’s case on my own. I’d done it a thousand times, so why should this one be any different?

“I understand,” I said eventually.

“I’m really sorry, Ian,” she said, and I could hear the sincerity in her voice.

“There’s no need to apologise, Paisley,” I assured her. “You’re doing the right thing for yourself.
